The Company

Green Cat Renewables (GCR) is a dynamic, innovative company that provides the complete range of technical services required to deliver renewable energy projects. The team of over 90 Engineers and Environmental Consultants deliver projects on behalf of clients from four offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Livingston and Biggar. GCR also works closely with its three sister companies Green Cat Contracting and Green Cat Hydrogen based in the UK and Green Cat Renewables Canada based in Calgary and Halifax. In May 2025, Green Cat Renewables started its European engineering consultancy in the Netherlands to expand its services in mainland Europe.

Job Summary

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and improving electrical systems comprised of multiple renewable energy technologies. You will be responsible for the planning, design, analysis, and optimization of electrical power systems, focusing on islanded and grid-connected microgrids. This role involves ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of power grids, including generation, transmission, and distribution networks. Additionally, you will bring your expertise in switchgear and medium-voltage (MV) transformers to enhance the performance and reliability of these systems. The role will involve ensuring system performance, reliability, and compliance with international standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of electrical systems and components for renewable energy projects, ensuring alignment with performance and safety standards.
  • Lead the design and optimization of power converters, including back-to-back converters, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and compliance with grid codes and international standards.
  • Develop and optimize electrical layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams and oversee the integration of electrical systems with other subsystems, such as mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems.
  • Develop and review technical specifications, design documentation, test plans, and performance reports, particularly for power cables, protection relays, switchgear, and MV transformers.
  • Define testing protocols for prototypes and production units to verify performance and safety.
  • Validate system designs under various conditions, such as grid faults, load changes, and black start scenarios, ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standards
  • Design and develop electrical power systems, focusing on the integration of switchgear, MV transformers, and power converters connected to DC or AC electrical networks.
  • Conduct detailed simulations and modeling to analyze and optimize the performance and efficiency of power systems, including hybrid systems, involving renewable energy systems.
  • Develop technical specifications, design documentation, test plans, and performance reports, particularly for power cables, protection relays, switchgear, and MV transformers.
  • Perform feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and risk assessments for new projects and system upgrades.
  • Perform load flow analyses, short-circuit analyses, stability analyses, and harmonic analyses
  • Ensure electrical systems and power systems comply with local, national, and international grid codes.
  • Prepare and submit documentation for grid code compliance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to renewable energy power system operations
  • Monitor power system performance, analyze reliability metrics, and propose enhancements to improve resilience and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, software, and control engineers, to integrate electrical systems.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and team members.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and performance reports.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in power electronics and renewable energy technologies, incorporating new findings into design practices.

The Candidate

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in electrical engineering (or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems design, including transformers, switchgear, power converters.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and system-level issues.
  • Proficiency in power systems modeling and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, PSS®E, ETAP, PSCAD, PowerFactory).
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and preparing technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations related to power converters and renewable energy systems.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to inspire and guide teams toward innovative solutions and continuous improvement.
  • Fluent in English.

Desirable Skills

  • A master’s degree.
  • Relevant Electrical Engineering certifications.
  • Familiarity with grid integration and compliance requirements for renewable energy systems.
  • Proven experience in leading engineering teams and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
